Active social justice projects at UUCB
Read about the many social justice activities that the Social Justice Council (SJC) currently helps organize, including the all-church project working towards a single-payer health care plan.
How to start a social action initiative
Any church member can start and manage one of the following types of social action initiatives:
- Social action task force — This typically lasts more than a year, requires lots of church resources, or is considered extremely important by the congregation. Social action task forces must be voted on by the congregation each year to continue in operation.
- Social action project — This usually lasts from one to twelve months and requires medium use of church resources.
Our project to green our building is an example of a social action project.
- Immediate witness initiative — This is usually a one-time social action event or demonstration, such as a rally for peace,
GLBT rights, or environmental rights that is scheduled to happen on a particular date. Use of church resources is usually low.
To get started, download the UUCB social action application form, complete it, and turn it into any SJC member or email it to:

How SJC review process works
The SJC reviews all social action requests for a good fit with our church's values. The SJC gives high priority to social action initiatives with the following attributes:
- Is included in the UUCB's key social justice opportunity areas
- Does not exceed church resources
- Is supported by verifiable facts
- Provides clear goals
- Is in tune with our congregation's social action values and interests
Benefits of working with SJC
Once your project has been reviewed and approved, the SJC will work with you to:
- Secure space for your social action meetings
- Provide SJC bulletin board and table space during the coffee fellowship hour after the Sunday service
- Help with pulpit announcements, church newsletter articles, and integration with other UUCB committees
- Purchase buttons, T-shirts, banners, or other needed supplies, as needed
- Suggest organizations your social action effort could partner with, help with email lists or grants, etc.
