Single-Payer Health Care All-Church Project

UUCB is actively working on a project involving the entire church to bring affordable universal health care to all Coloradoans in 2008 and to all Americans in 2009 under a single-payer plan. This project, which is working closely with Health Care For All Colorado, is organizing social witness, education, and other activities to achieve these goals.

Health care for all Coloradoans need not cost more than we are currently paying, as shown in the simplified diagram for a Cost-Saving Model for Colorado Single-Payer Health Care System.

We invite the active participation of all church members on this important initiative. For more information on how you can get involved, contact

Write Your State Legislator

One important thing you can easily do right now is write a letter to your state legislators, asking them to take action on the critical universal health care issue. Use the link on Progress Now organization's website to identify your state legislators and then email them.

You can use the five talking points below, but it's important to also briefly share your health care story with your legislators.

1. The single-payer health care reform model is the only one evaluated by the Lewin Group that demonstrates overall health care cost savings ($1.4 billion to Colorado) while providing comprehensive coverage for all.
2. Only single-payer health care provides true free choice of providers and hospitals. Multi-payer insurances plans limit provider and hospital choices, and annual employer health plan changes require employee change of providers, disrupting health care.
3. Single-payer insurance cuts wasteful administrative spending (31 cents of each health care dollar) that now goes to exorbitant CEO salaries, profits, and providers' need to hire extra office help to process multi-payer insurance billing and paperwork.
4. Single-payer insurance provides comprehensive coverage for all, providing true protection for families against health and financial risk — unlike the underinsurance of the Massachusetts-style mandate for purchase of "minimum benefit private insurance" (advocated by the 208 Commission).
5. Single-payer health care covers all needed care, whereas multi-payer insurances make profits by denying health care coverage.

Hold Your Own Sicko House Party

The Social Justice Council has four DVD copies of "Sicko," Michael Moore's award-winning documentary on America's broken health care system.

You can check out "Sicko" if you can’t make it to one of our church showings, or if you have seen it and want to hold a Sicko party for your friends and family in the comfort of your own home. Just stop by the Social Justice information table during Sunday coffee hour to reserve your copy.
