Religious Education at UUCB

Educational Philosophy

UUCB believes in a life-long process of religious education (RE) and integrating our children into church life. Each Sunday worship service includes a "For All Ages" time, when children are invited to sit at the front of the sanctuary for a story or activity geared especially for them, after which they go to their classes.

The UU educational philosophy is not to impose doctrines upon either our children or each other. Our way is to give ourselves a place where everyone can safely and honestly create a personal faith — one that grows from reason, experience, and love. Read more about the UU philosophy of religious education and the curricula that is available to UUCB from our parent organization, the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations (UUA).

RE Youth Classes

We provide Sunday morning RE classes for children (preschool through grade 5; younger children go to our nursery) and for middle-school youth. We also have a great youth group for high-school teens. Our classes make use of the professionally researched and tested educational curricula developed by UUA, which we tailor to match our particular class situations. Our Religious Education Council and RE teachers strive to provide classroom, social, and group activities that teach our children key UU principles that can inspire them in a life-long practice of strong moral, ethical, and social action values.

Class Registration

Please register your child(ren) for RE if you plan to attend more than three times this year. We need to know how to contact you, and if your child has any allergies or medical conditions. Contact the RE Director for registration forms.

The annual RE class fee is $50 per child, with a maximum to any family of $100. Scholarships and payment plans are available, as needed. This fee helps offset the approximate cost of $250 per child to run our RE program.

Volunteers are the foundation of our RE program, and parents are expected to contribute their time and effort. To have more input into developing what RE programs are made available at our church, we invite you to join the Religious Education Council.

Other RE Services

Besides Sunday morning RE classes, we offer several intergenerational activities throughout the year, such as picnics and holiday events.

UUCB also offers various classes and workshops for adults, including adult "Sunday School" every Sunday from 9 to 9:45 a.m.

In addition, UUCB has a lending library of books on religious and spiritual topics for all ages, as well as a bookstore through which you can make purchases.
